Bringing the World to Otaru: The OUC English Lecture Series
Presenter: Professor Shawn Clankie
Time: 2-4pm (with a 20 min break at about 2:50pm for refreshments and mingling)
Cost: 500 yen (members free)

This talk focuses on the creation of an English lecture series as a means of both fostering L2 language use and in recreating the experiences found at many overseas universities. This is a behind the scenes look at what it takes to run a series--from the management and logistical aspects, to the budget and securing of funding, to the continuous recruitment of speakers. In this sense, it is a “how to” guide for building a lecture series, looking at the successes and failures that have taken place during the first seven years of the series. It is the speaker’s hope that other universities will consider the creation of a similar series, and that this talk and the data provided will help them to do so.
